Dosas!

I always seem to crave something random while pregnant. Last pregnancy it was cricket & guacamole burritos - this pregnancy it's Dosas! In our country the food in the North is very different from the food in the South. Dosas are Southern food. Most people here up North don't make Southern food their homes very often, so you have to eat it out :) One of my fave place to get Dosas is Haldirams. It's yummy :)
So what is a Dosa? A Dosa is basically a crepe made from rice and black lentils. There are many different side dishes that are served with it. This one is served with Sambar & Coconut Chutney. There are a bunch of different kinds of Dosas but my favorite is the Masala Dosa :) They used to serve potatoes on the side of some Dosas a long time back, but then at one time there was a potato shortage, so the cooks would mash up the potatoes and mix in spices and onions with it BUT since many devout Hindus and Jains in that area don't eat onions, they hid them INSIDE the dosa (like the picture below).... and now it's the "Masala Dosa" :)

Dosas come in all shapes and sizes - you can even get HUGE ones for you and your entire table to share!Anyway, just thought I'd show you one of the fun things I love about food here :)

I always wondered how they made those giant dosas. Man vs. Food needs to go to India and try that. Except since dosas aren't very heavy, I'm sure it would be no contest.

yep, I need to know if you meant cricket the sport or cricket the critter. I figure that if you were in Thailand you could get fried crickets and avacados if you were really craving them. It is a disturbing combination though.

yes... I craved real crickets!

I was in my first trimester with Aashini and on TV someone (from Mexico) was making Cricket & Guac burritos and they looked sooooo good to me. I wanted one sooo bad! I made some Guac and it was good, but by the time I got to Thailand and could get the cricket part I totally didn't want it :) haha!

Looks so good! If we ever come to visit, it will revolve around FOOD!
why don't they eat onions?

Well, some devout H'ndus and Ja'ns don't eat onions and garlic because if you eat those vegetables you're "killing the plant" by eating them (whereas with apples and things like that, you take the apple and the tree lives) - does that make sense?

Campa Cola & Exploring :)

Today we had some things to do in the Central part of our city, so while we were there, we decided to take on some adventures :) Adventure #1 - the underground market. This market is pretty crazy. It's actually underground and has electronics & clothes mostly. They sell things pretty cheap, so it's an interesting place to go. Today we got an 64 Gig flash drive/pen drive for about $5. Crazy hunh? Here's Adam and Aashini in one of the stores. They're all REALLY small stores - about 10x10 feet I would guess (but I'm really bad at guessing that sort of stuff :)) We go here a lot to get things, so I guess it's not a new adventure, but an adventure nonetheless. Before the next part of our adventure (the real part of our adventure) we stopped for lunch. Aashini will always eat at McDonalds, so that's where we went :) They just started selling chicken nuggets here at McDonalds, so it's super easy to get her to eat there :) This McDonald's had high chair

Starbucks!

Starbucks opened in our city last night!!  I'm not a huge coffee drinker... but I was excited about the opening!!  (I think I like Starbucks because of all the green! haha!... Aashini and Diya think the mermaid on the logo looks like me... haha! Maybe it's the weird wavy hair :)... not sure :) ) Anyway, we got there and the line was SUPER long!  The wait time was about 45 minutes!!!  There were so many people there!!!  I tried to get a pic of all the people... (that's why this picture is at an annoying angle... I was trying to get it all in in between the columns :))    Here's Aashini doing a jumping picture!!  The girls tried to do a jumping picture :) haha!  haha!  They had a few spills along the way :)  I never got them both jumping :)  Stuff for sale....  OK, one more because I think they are cute :) haha!  People waiting in line :) Some friends that made it inside! :)  We decided not to wait in line... So we'll
