Retire in Style!

An awesome couple that we're friends with - Jack & Cathy - are retiring... They have lived overseas most of their lives - and are retiring after a whole bunch of years... I can't remember how many... Anyway, we threw them a big party! They love elephants and we thought - there couldn't be a better theme... "Elephants never forget - and we will never forget you!" :) Adam and I hired the elephant - it was pretty cool! - weeks before the party, they came over to our house and showed us all of the elephant packages we could purchase... some of them included some super-fancy dressings on the elephant! The package we got, involved some pretty cool paintings on the elephant!
Jack & Cathy got to be the first ones to ride the elephant :) I love this pic (below)! Cathy is so fun! (But then again, you have to be to live overseas for so long ;) )
Here are Jack & Cathy on the elephant! - I think this pic is cool! It was funny because we called the elephant guys and asked if we need to get permits or anything like that to have the elephant walk around the neighborhood - and believe it or not, we didn't!
The elephant was walking around in the middle of the neighborhood! :) Haha! I love this pic below because you can see a family in the window watching everything going on :) Can you imagine looking out your window and seeing an elephant just a couple of feet from you! haha!
Of course we had to get a pic in front of the elephant :) Aashini didn't get to ride the elephant this time - She'll have to wait for the next elephant opportunity - she wouldn't have enjoyed it anyway - she slept through the whole thing!
After everyone who wanted to got to ride the elephant, we got to feed him. That was really cool! It was amazing to see the elephant curl the bananas or peanuts in his trunk and put them in his mouth - it was so cool!
It was a very fun day! :) Elephants ROCK! :) We love you Jack & Cathy!

Maybe an elephant for Aashini's 5th bday? :)
And y'all are awesome for doing this for them. WAY TO GO, SHEFS! All that planning, and with a newborn, too. More than anyone I know, the O's deserved to retire in style.

Cooking!

Cooking is sooo much harder here. THis is how you "puree" vegetables when you don't have a blender or food processor (or power). Some people have those things, but most people don't. This is my friend Gita. She's mashing up some onions. It's a marble slab that's not polished and they use a big rounded rock and just roll/mash! It's cool!!

Protesting

There's some political stuff going on in our city (and now the country) right now. People are peacefully fighting against corruption. It's been very interesting to follow. Tonight there was some protesting in our neighborhood. Here are some more protesting pictures. There will probably be more protesting to come... we'll see what happens!

Jaya's Engagement!

My good friend Jaya (Mayank's sister that lives in M-town) - just got engaged!  On Sunday, I took the trip to M-town to go to her Engagement Ceremony (or Ring Ceremony).  It was a lot of fun :)!   First Stop - Beauty Parlor!  We walked a little ways down the street to a lady's house.  The beauty parlor was in one of the rooms in her house.  Jaya had already been to her house that morning to get her hair done, but now it was time for the makeup.  This beauty parlor was interesting because it only had 2 light bulbs in the whole room (and they were the energy saver kind that were dimmer than the regular ones), so it wasn't that bright inside the room.   Here's a pic of Jaya in the chair getting her makeup done.   Notice that her hair is crimped.  They use the crimper on people's hair when it's a special occasion - awesome!!! They put a  bindi  on her head and then the lady painted more and made it super fancy. Here's the finished product (after 1.5 hours)!  She...
