Fasting Food!

Right now we're in holiday season over here. This time of year is my favorite. It's pretty much one big constant holiday right now until January. Right now a big holiday called Navratri (or Navratra) is going on. It's a special 9 day holiday (Navratra is Sanskrit for 9 days)... but actually the holiday in our area of the country is 10 days... The 10th day is Dusshera (the day the burn the huge statues). You're supposed to fast from any food if you can (most people don't), but if you can't you're supposed to eat special fasting foods.
The ways that people celebrate, fast & do rituals are very different. Generally, this is the thought: For this holiday, you are supposed to eat one meal a day (usually after sunset before your bath). You are supposed to bathe both morning and evening You can have juice, milk & fruit during the day. For this holiday, they are supposed to fast from grains, garlic, onions, eggs or meat (some Hindus do eat meat). Grains are a HUGE part of the meals here. In our area, most people eat bread (roti) with every meal, so going without grains is a BIG deal. What's interesting is that most people make bread out of water chestnut four - crazy hunh? I had no idea you could make flour out of those!

Anyway, I went to my fave South Asian food place called Haldiram's. They had some fun fasting foods. I tried this new one called a "Lachha Tokri"... It's pretty much the same as the Raj Katori but nothing is made from grains... the bowl part is kinda like a hash-brown bowl and the other stuff is some other sort of grain substitute (maybe water chestnut flour - I couldn't figure it out)....
I forgot to take a pic until I had already started eating it... so it looks a little gross, but you can see the inside of it :)
Anyway, I'll have some more interesting food posts to come, I've been remembering to take pics of my food lately :)

do pregnant women and kids do the fasting (or special diet) as well?

It looks like Mexican food - beans, guacamole, sour cream... :) But I bet it tastes a whole lot different! Navrati came early this year - does that mean Diwali is in October?

Pregnant & nursing women can eat whenever they want. They're still supposed to only eat the special fasting foods, but they don't have to go without food during the day - same with kids.

Cooking!

Cooking is sooo much harder here. THis is how you "puree" vegetables when you don't have a blender or food processor (or power). Some people have those things, but most people don't. This is my friend Gita. She's mashing up some onions. It's a marble slab that's not polished and they use a big rounded rock and just roll/mash! It's cool!!

Protesting

There's some political stuff going on in our city (and now the country) right now. People are peacefully fighting against corruption. It's been very interesting to follow. Tonight there was some protesting in our neighborhood. Here are some more protesting pictures. There will probably be more protesting to come... we'll see what happens!

We're BACK! (with Rats!)

We made it back! The flights were so long (especially our 6 hour layover right off the bat) but we made it!! We flew from Tallahassee to Memphis (where the long layover was) and then Memphis to Detroit (see picture below). It was snowing in Detroit! The only snow we saw all the time in the states was at the airpots! haha! We left Detroit about an hour late because they had to De-ice the plane! I'm from the south so I had no idea that they did that... and that it would take so long! haha! We were an hour late coming into Amsterdam (where it was snowing too!) and had to rush to our gate (it was a blur of wooden shoes!)... When we got in the plane we had to wait about 1.5 hours while they de-iced that plane! So we got into the Captial at about 2:00 am!! When we got home we were welcomed to a rat infestation in our bathroom!!! EWWWW!!!! Aparently, if the toilet isn't flushed for a couple months and dries out, then rats can crawl UP the TOILET!!! yes... nice... They wrecked our ba...
