"Everything New for Diwali"

So in M-town, around this time of year, we became familiar with the phrase "Everything New for Diwali"... Diwali - the HUGE holiday coming up in November brings about a lot "newness"... People buy new things, fix up their houses, and all sorts of other "new" things... Usually, about a month (or less) before Diwali, everyone gets going on the "newness"...

Our neighbors across the street have decided to paint their house for Diwali... Painting houses here is pretty different than in the US :) First, they build this amazing scaffolding out of bamboo that covers the entire house... Then, since the house is made of concrete, they begin to chip off the paint (before they can paint)... Here's a pic of the scaffolding :)
Here's a pic of one of the guys chipping away at the paint... he's way up high at the top floor!
This year will be our first Diwali in the Capital... Holidays definitely aren't as fun here in our part of the Capital as it is in M-town, and I won't be able to travel around that time (I'll be really close to having the baby :))... so we'll have to figure out how to make it fun!! :) I'm sure it will rock :)

They didn't do this in the mountains, and then last Diwali we had just moved to the Capital, so this was the first time for us to see the newness! My friend was telling me all about it and then we started noticing that all the houses in our colony look completely different! Every thing is so pretty again! I love festival season!
very cool scaffolding:)

So is Diwali when Adam is supposed to buy you a new sari and toe-rings? Or is that another holiday? Just wondering if you can get one and not worry about your size...are they one size fits all (except for the shirt thingies?...maybe you should do a "Sari Lesson" post for all us out here who don't know the finer points:)

Also, November is only like 1 month away ...November is SO close to your due date...AHHHH! I'm so excited to get to see Jellybean!

Wow! That is some serious house painting!! I was thinking back to our Willingham painting days! If they could only have seen your apartment in all its color!! Ahh... I miss those days!

Wow that's really amazing that they chip the paint off the WHOLE house! Yikes. I would rather buy a new house.

Our house is being painted while we are gone. We got to choose the colors, but the landlord is in charge of the rest. We'll see what happens! :)

Cooking!

Cooking is sooo much harder here. THis is how you "puree" vegetables when you don't have a blender or food processor (or power). Some people have those things, but most people don't. This is my friend Gita. She's mashing up some onions. It's a marble slab that's not polished and they use a big rounded rock and just roll/mash! It's cool!!

Protesting

There's some political stuff going on in our city (and now the country) right now. People are peacefully fighting against corruption. It's been very interesting to follow. Tonight there was some protesting in our neighborhood. Here are some more protesting pictures. There will probably be more protesting to come... we'll see what happens!

Funny Things 2 - American Fair Edition

We just got back from Roadtrip #8 in Macon, GA. It was an awesome trip!! So, before we head out on the next trip, we went to the North Florida Fair! The fair is always famous for it's fried foods... they fried everything!!... They had fried/breaded zucchini, Mushrooms, Broccoli, Cauliflower, Onions, green tomatoes, okra, pickles, etc :) I had a lot of it too - YUM! Now, I'd heard of fried Snickers & twinkies (which they had) but they also had FRIED OREOS & PEANUTBUTTER CUPS :) The fair was cool. They had a shark show and a sea lion show... but our favorite was the pig races :) haha!!! It was hilarious!! Aashini was close up to the race until the pigs came - then she crawled up into Adam's lap really fast :) (as seen below) :) Pig races! haha! Cracks me up!
