Purple Carrots!!

I wrote about these a long time ago, but since then I've learned a lot more about them so I thought I'd re-share... besides, they're really interesting to me :)
I hadn't seen (or heard) of purple carrots until we arrived here in South Asia. I remember learning the word for Carrot and then going to the veggie seller guy to ask for carrots. When I asked him, he pointed to some red carrot-looking things and some purple carrot-looking things. I thought he didn't understand my Hindi, so I repeated the word but got the same response. So, I decided to try the purple carrots.
I read up a little on them (there's not much out there), but aparently they originated in the Middle East around Afghanistan and then made their way over to South Asia. I also read that carrots used to be very thin, red, purple and black - and terribly bitter. The orange color didn't appear until the 16th century when enterprising Dutch growers used a mutated yellow carrot seed from North Africa to create a carrot in the Dutch Royal Family's official color - orange. I thought that was interesting :)Anyway, they tasted almost the same as a regular carrot. If it was a blind taste-test I probably wouldn't have noticed. BUT one thing I did notice was how they make great dyes... my cutting board and hands turned a light shade of purple - as well as my teeth and tongue! :)
Anyway, thought I'd share (I don't have much to share right now since I'm not out so much... I only have 1.5 weeks left in the 1st trimester, so hopefully I'll get out more :))...

I never tried the purple carrot. I kinda wish I had now! I used to wonder if I could use beet juice to dye my hair pink. Maybe I should've tried for purple carrot hair!

I would only eat the purple ones, just for fun.

My hubby will be pleased to know why carrots are orange. As a Dutchman and a Clemson fan, he is all about ANYTHING orange!

They have purple cauliflower here, I'm going to buy some this fall when they have it at the farmers market again.
Purple carrots!?!? Oh my goodness. How funny that carrots were "altered" to make them orange! :)

It didn't dye them for too long, but I bet if you ate them a lot then your teeth might get a little funky-dyed :)

hmmm...I've never noticed purple carrots. Maybe I just assumed they were something else. I wonder if their vitamin and mineral content is different than the orange ones...

yeah, the vitamins and stuff are supposed to be very different. The purple carrots are supposed to be very hight in anti-oxidents (where the orange ones don't really have any)... very ineresting :)

Cooking!

Cooking is sooo much harder here. THis is how you "puree" vegetables when you don't have a blender or food processor (or power). Some people have those things, but most people don't. This is my friend Gita. She's mashing up some onions. It's a marble slab that's not polished and they use a big rounded rock and just roll/mash! It's cool!!

Protesting

There's some political stuff going on in our city (and now the country) right now. People are peacefully fighting against corruption. It's been very interesting to follow. Tonight there was some protesting in our neighborhood. Here are some more protesting pictures. There will probably be more protesting to come... we'll see what happens!

We're BACK! (with Rats!)

We made it back! The flights were so long (especially our 6 hour layover right off the bat) but we made it!! We flew from Tallahassee to Memphis (where the long layover was) and then Memphis to Detroit (see picture below). It was snowing in Detroit! The only snow we saw all the time in the states was at the airpots! haha! We left Detroit about an hour late because they had to De-ice the plane! I'm from the south so I had no idea that they did that... and that it would take so long! haha! We were an hour late coming into Amsterdam (where it was snowing too!) and had to rush to our gate (it was a blur of wooden shoes!)... When we got in the plane we had to wait about 1.5 hours while they de-iced that plane! So we got into the Captial at about 2:00 am!! When we got home we were welcomed to a rat infestation in our bathroom!!! EWWWW!!!! Aparently, if the toilet isn't flushed for a couple months and dries out, then rats can crawl UP the TOILET!!! yes... nice... They wrecked our ba...
