Holiday Season!

It's Holiday Season here! This is a fun time of the year. Diwali starts tomorrow (Oct 15). The first day of Diwali is called Dhanteras (Aashini was born on Dhanteras 2 years ago!). "Dhan" means wealth. It's the biggest shopping day of the year! (think of the day after Thanksgiving x 10! It's insane!). People are supposed to pray to the goddess Lakshmi for blessings in the form of wealth. Since it's the day associated with wealth, businesses & homes are renovated and/or decorated for the goddess of wealth (Lakshmi). Entrances to houses or offices are usually decorated with a Rangoli - the pic below is a picture of one of the many rangolis at the mall today. They are usually made with colored powders, colored sawdust or flower petals.
Last night we went to a big Diwali fair in our neighborhood. They were selling lots of things and had food and fair-type rides. Here's the fancy rangoli at the entrance to the fair.
They had lots of performers at the fair. It was fun to watch. Aashini thought it was cool :)
These guys were really fun :) They ran around singing and dancing - they had tons of energy!
This guy was awesome!!! He was so fun on his stilts :)
He held Aashini for a minute - at first she liked it, but then she got scared :(
Some of the rides weren't quite ready yet :) haha! This one made me laugh because it looked like a plane crash.
There were lots of performers. This guy was a good singer - but his mullet cracked me up :)

Awesome, thanks for posting those pics. I'm sad about missing Diwali this year! Not sad about missing the insane traffic and crowded markets though!

Comic Con 2013

Comic Con 2013 just ended.  It was a fun one this year.  This was the 3rd Annual Comic Con here.  We've been to it all 3 years.  It's getting bigger each year!  I think they grew out of their venue this year...it was soooo crowded!  Here's me imitating "Superkudi" :)  Aashini and me :)  For the Love of Comics...  Some guys that were dressed up... the guy on the left isn't in his full attire... He won the CosPlay contest that day... he won a trip to Dubai to their Comic Con!!  This was my favorite costume of the day... Nyan Cat :)  There were lots of people there!  Me and the girls on the 2nd day :)  I had to have at least one jumping picture :) Our friend Ford made a video of the first day... check it out!

MasterChef Australia!!!

MasterChef Australia is a great show!  When it's on, we get it 5 days a week.  There are TONS of episodes.  The thing that makes it really cool is that the judges and contestants are all so nice!  The contestants don't stab each other in the back and they even help each other!   Anyway, the other night (a couple of weeks ago) some friends of ours were in town and wanted to go to Chili's, so we went over to the mall to eat :)  When we got there we saw that the bookstore had the Judges (and very famous chefs/restaurant owners) inside signing cookbooks!    When we got inside, they had just closed off the line, so we weren't allowed to go through the line and get them to sign a cookbook or get a pic with them :(    So... we stood as close as we could and took pics :) haha!  (and I didn't have my camera, only my phone to take pics)... Here's Gary...    Here's George with my friend Amy :)  And my at...

Cooking!

Cooking is sooo much harder here. THis is how you "puree" vegetables when you don't have a blender or food processor (or power). Some people have those things, but most people don't. This is my friend Gita. She's mashing up some onions. It's a marble slab that's not polished and they use a big rounded rock and just roll/mash! It's cool!!
