Interesting Things...

We live in a city (and country) that has a lot of poverty. It's everywhere. In America if you have a kid, either one parent stays home to watch her, or she is put in childcare/daycare, etc. That isn't possible for all people here. We live in a land of extremes. Our neighbors are rich and have a nanny for their children while they are home just so they have more free time -- while there are people that have to do manual labor while watching their kids at the same time. Many people of lower income here do a lot of manual labor jobs. They dig holes, chop up bricks, build roads, etc. As you can see in this picture below, this woman is working a very hard job (using a pick ax and busting up the rocks) while watching her young child. This is VERY common - it's something that we see almost every day.
I always wonder what they do when their children are infants. I'm still not sure what everyone does, but I saw what one lady did the other day and though it was very ingenuitive!
She made a bed out of Styrofoam for her baby to sleep in! What a creative idea! The baby was very happy.

We still tell stories about how strong those construction women are, doing all that work, lifting rocks, etc, all the while their babies are tied to their backs! I don't know why I never thought about it before that they probably have to leave their kids alone at home when they are super young.

I can't believe she has to do all that while wearing all the clothes too, its seems like they would get tangled and really be a hazard., Yea, makes us all think doesn't it?
That sure was a big healthy baby.

This is my friend Gita. She's mashing up some onions. It's a marble slab that's not polished and they use a big rounded rock and just roll/mash! It's cool!!

Protesting

There's some political stuff going on in our city (and now the country) right now. People are peacefully fighting against corruption. It's been very interesting to follow. Tonight there was some protesting in our neighborhood. Here are some more protesting pictures. There will probably be more protesting to come... we'll see what happens!

We're BACK! (with Rats!)

We made it back! The flights were so long (especially our 6 hour layover right off the bat) but we made it!! We flew from Tallahassee to Memphis (where the long layover was) and then Memphis to Detroit (see picture below). It was snowing in Detroit! The only snow we saw all the time in the states was at the airpots! haha! We left Detroit about an hour late because they had to De-ice the plane! I'm from the south so I had no idea that they did that... and that it would take so long! haha! We were an hour late coming into Amsterdam (where it was snowing too!) and had to rush to our gate (it was a blur of wooden shoes!)... When we got in the plane we had to wait about 1.5 hours while they de-iced that plane! So we got into the Captial at about 2:00 am!! When we got home we were welcomed to a rat infestation in our bathroom!!! EWWWW!!!! Aparently, if the toilet isn't flushed for a couple months and dries out, then rats can crawl UP the TOILET!!! yes... nice... They wrecked our ba...
